About Asa Hull
Asa Hull (1828–1907) was an American composer, hymn writer, and music publisher whose work contributed significantly to 19th-century religious music. Born in Keene, New York, Hull eventually established himself in New York City as a music publisher, where he produced numerous hymnals and songbooks. He married Emma F. Atherton, and together they had a daughter, Harriett.
Hull wrote many hymn tunes and authored songs with both devotional and social themes, including temperance rallying songs. Between 1863 and 1895, he published 33 works, of which 21 were songbooks, reflecting a prolific output that catered to both congregational singing and the moral reform movements of his time. His compositions often focused on spiritual encouragement, personal devotion, and the Christian life, with texts that emphasized faith, perseverance, and hope.
Among his notable hymns are Stand up for Jesus, Christian, Stand, Walk in the Light the Lord Hath Given, We Are Waiting by the River, We Are Watching on the Shore, and Star of the East, O Beautiful Star. These works exemplify his skill at blending accessible melodies with clear spiritual messages suitable for both worship and Sunday school. Hull’s hymns continue to be valued for their lyrical simplicity, theological clarity, and the encouragement they provide to believers.
Asa Hull passed away in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1907, leaving behind a legacy of music that shaped the devotional life of American Christians in the 19th century. His work remains a testament to the power of hymnody to instruct, inspire, and uplift the faithful.
