About Avis B. Christiansen

Avis B. Christiansen (1895–1985) was a prolific American hymn writer whose life was marked by quiet devotion, deep spirituality, and a lifelong engagement with Christian ministry. Born Avis Marguerite Burgeson in 1895 in Chicago, Illinois, she grew up immersed in a faith-filled environment, attending the Moody Church, which was pastored for many years by Dr. Harry Ironside. From an early age, she demonstrated a remarkable gift for writing, composing poems and verses that reflected her heartfelt Christian faith and a desire to encourage others in spiritual life. In 1917, she married Ernest Christiansen, who later became a vice president of Moody Bible Institute, strengthening her lifelong connection to one of the central hubs of evangelical activity in America.

Avis Christiansen was known for her modesty and reserved nature, sometimes publishing under pen names including Avis Burgesson, Christian B. Anson, and Constance B. Reid. Despite her quiet personality, her literary output was extraordinary, producing thousands of poems and hymn texts over the course of her life. Many of her works focus on themes of personal devotion, trust in God, the joy of salvation, and the assurance of Christ’s presence, reflecting both a deeply personal and theologically rich understanding of the Christian life.

Her hymns have been widely sung in churches across the United States and beyond, often set to music that emphasizes worship, praise, and reflection. Through her careful craftsmanship and spiritual insight, Avis B. Christiansen contributed significantly to 20th-century hymnody, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire and encourage believers to deepen their faith and live in gratitude to God. She passed away in 1985, leaving behind a rich treasure of spiritual songs and writings that continue to resonate in worship today.
