About Benjamin Hall Kennedy

Benjamin Hall Kennedy (6 November 1804 – 6 April 1889) was a prominent English classical scholar, educator, and hymn translator. Born near Birmingham, England, he was the son of the Rev. Raun Kennedy and was educated at King Edward’s School in Birmingham, Shrewsbury School, and St. John’s College, Cambridge. He achieved first-class honors in the Classical Tripos and was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal. Kennedy served as a Fellow of St. John’s College, Head Master of Shrewsbury School from 1836 to 1866, and later as Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge. He was also a canon of Ely Cathedral.

Kennedy made substantial contributions to English hymnody and psalmody, particularly through his works The Psalter, or the Psalms of David, in English Verse (1860) and Hymnologia Christiana (1863). These collections provided English versifications of the Psalms, many of which have been adapted into other hymnals, and included a number of his original hymns. Kennedy’s versions are noted for their literary quality, theological precision, and practical devotion, blending fidelity to the Psalms with poetic expression suited for congregational singing.

In addition to his original compositions, Kennedy translated hymns from German and recast works by other writers, creating texts that could be readily used in worship. His hymns and psalm paraphrases cover all seasons of the Christian year and a wide range of devotional themes, from daily praise to major festival observances. Notable examples include Ask ye what great thing I know (translated from German), Zion, at thy shining gates, and Who trusts in God, a strong abode. Kennedy’s work provided a rich resource for hymn compilers and remains a reference for those interested in 19th-century English hymnody.
