About Bert Shadduck

Bert Shadduck (Bertram Henry Shadduck, 1869–1950) was an American gospel hymn writer and evangelist whose work is best remembered through a small number of vivid and evangelistic songs used in revival meetings and early gospel hymnals. Although detailed biographical information about his life is very limited in major hymnological sources, his influence is preserved through the hymns he authored and their continued appearance in collections of gospel music.

Shadduck is most widely known for writing “I Dreamed That the Great Judgment Morning”, a powerful gospel hymn composed in 1894. This hymn presents a dramatic and solemn picture of the final judgment described in Revelation, portraying people from all walks of life standing before God. Its refrain, emphasizing “weeping and wailing” when judgment comes, made it especially effective in evangelistic settings, where it was used to urge listeners toward repentance and faith.

His other hymns include “Meeting and parting in tears and in laughter,” “On a lone hill neath the evergreen shade,” “Once heavy laden, lost in the night,” “Only once an earth wayfarer,” and “Who cared that Jesus wept alone for men.” These texts reflect common themes in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century gospel song writing, such as personal salvation, the brevity of life, and the urgency of responding to the message of Christ.

Though Shadduck does not have the extensive biography or widespread recognition of some major hymn writers, his work fits firmly within the tradition of revivalist gospel music. His hymns are characterized by direct language, vivid imagery, and a strong appeal to the conscience. They were especially popular in camp meetings, evangelistic services, and informal worship gatherings where emotional and spiritual response was emphasized.

Today, Bert Shadduck is remembered primarily through his enduring hymn texts, particularly “The Great Judgment Morning,” which continues to stand as a striking example of early gospel hymnody focused on eternity, judgment, and the call to salvation.
