About C. H. Woolston

C. H. Woolston (Clarence Herbert Woolston, 1856–1927) was an American Baptist minister and hymn writer best remembered for his contributions to children’s hymnody. Born in 1856, Woolston served in pastoral ministry during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, living with his wife Agnes in East Brunswick, New Jersey, around 1880, and later in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he remained for much of his life. His work in ministry was closely tied to teaching and nurturing young believers, which is reflected in the simple, accessible, and doctrinally clear hymns he composed.

Woolston’s most enduring legacy lies in his hymn writing, particularly his association with the well-known children’s hymn “Jesus Loves the Little Children, All the Children of the World.” His texts were often written with a focus on instructing children in basic Christian truths, emphasizing themes such as Christ’s love, care, and invitation to come to Him. Other hymns attributed to him include “Jesus Calls the Children Dear” and “In the Lamb’s Bright Hall,” which similarly reflect a pastoral concern for guiding the hearts of the young toward faith in Christ.

Though not as widely recognized as some major hymn writers, Woolston’s influence has been far-reaching through the continued use of his hymns in Sunday schools and children’s ministries across generations. His work demonstrates a commitment to making the message of the gospel clear and memorable for children, contributing to early spiritual formation. He died in 1927, leaving behind a legacy rooted in faithful ministry and a lasting impact on Christian hymnody for the young.
