About C. Mervyn Maxwell

C. Mervyn Maxwell (Charles Mervyn Maxwell, 1925–1999) was an American theologian, historian, educator, and occasional hymn writer best known for his contributions to Seventh-day Adventist scholarship. Born in 1925, he was the son of Arthur S. Maxwell, a prominent Adventist editor and author, and grew up in an environment deeply shaped by Christian teaching and publishing. Maxwell went on to become a respected professor of church history at Andrews University, where he taught for many years and influenced generations of students through his engaging teaching and commitment to biblical faith.

Although primarily recognized as a historian and author, Maxwell also contributed to hymnody with a small number of texts. His hymn “Christ the Lord, All Power Possessing,” along with its Spanish counterpart “Cristo, Rey Omnipotente,” reflects his strong theological convictions, emphasizing the sovereignty of Christ and His authority over all creation. These themes align with his broader work, which often focused on church history, prophecy, and the interpretation of Scripture within the Adventist tradition.

Maxwell was especially known for his accessible writing style and his ability to make complex theological and historical ideas understandable to a wide audience. His most notable works include narrative-style presentations of church history and prophecy, which have been widely read within the Adventist community. Though his hymn writing was limited in quantity, it complements his larger legacy as a teacher and communicator of Christian truth. He died in 1999, leaving behind a lasting impact on theological education and a small but meaningful contribution to Christian hymnody.
