About Claude William Foss

C. W. Foss (1855–1935)

Claude William Foss was born on August 28, 1855, in Geneva, Illinois, and died February 8, 1935, in Rock Island, Illinois. He was the son of Swedish immigrants and pursued his early education at the Red Wing College institute in Red Wing, Minnesota. In 1879, he entered Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1883.

Foss began his career as a professor of history and political science at Augustana College in 1884. In 1888, he became vice-president of the college, serving until 1900. Following the death of Dr. T. N. Hasselquist, he acted as president until Dr. Olof Olsson assumed the position in 1891. After Olsson’s death, Foss again served as acting president until Dr. Gustav Andreen became president.

Beyond academia, Foss was actively involved in the Augustana Synod, serving on the board of directors for the Augustana Book Concern, the Board of Home Missions, and as treasurer of the Board of Foreign Missions. In 1908, he was appointed by the General Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in North America as a commissioner to inspect mission fields in southern India, traveling extensively in 1908–09. He also visited missions in Persia, and traveled across Egypt, the Holy Land, Asia Minor, southern Russia, and Europe.

Foss contributed significantly to religious and scholarly literature. He edited the Lutheran Quarterly Review, the Augustana Journal, and the Olive Leaf, and wrote for various other periodicals. His major literary work, Glimpses of Three Continents (1912), is a travelogue documenting his journeys through India, the Bible lands, and Europe.

He was a member of the American Institute of Civics, the American Academy of Political and Social Science, the American Historical Association, and the Swedish Historical Society of America, and attended Grace Lutheran Church in Rock Island, Illinois. Foss’s life reflects a blend of academic leadership, missionary support, and literary contribution within the Lutheran tradition.
