About Cyril V. Taylor
Cyril V. Taylor (1907–1991)
Cyril V. Taylor was a prominent English hymn writer, composer, and church musician whose work had a significant impact on twentieth-century Anglican worship. Born in 1907 in Wigan, Lancashire, England, Taylor displayed musical talent from an early age, serving as a chorister at Magdalen College School, Oxford. He continued his education at Christ Church, Oxford, and Westcott House, Cambridge, where he prepared for ordination in the Church of England.
Ordained in 1932, Taylor combined pastoral ministry with a lifelong commitment to church music. His early career included service as a producer in the religious broadcasting department of the BBC from 1939 to 1953, where he played a key role in bringing hymns and spiritual music to a wider audience. Taylor’s contributions to broadcasting reflect both his pastoral heart and his technical skill, blending theology, musicality, and accessibility.
After leaving the BBC, Taylor served as chaplain of the Royal School of Church Music from 1953 to 1958. He subsequently became vicar of Cerne Abbas in Dorsetshire (1958-1969) and later precentor of Salisbury Cathedral (1969-1975), positions that allowed him to influence both congregational worship and cathedral music programs.
Taylor was also an accomplished hymn composer and editor. He contributed twenty hymn tunes to the BBC Hymn Book (1951), which he also edited, and later provided additional tunes to the Methodist Hymns and Psalms (1983). His editorial work includes 100 Hymns for Today (1969) and More Hymns for Today (1980), both of which sought to enrich congregational worship with contemporary hymnody while maintaining theological depth and musical integrity. He further authored Hymns for Today Discussed (1984), a booklet exploring the background, meaning, and use of hymns in worship.
From 1975 to 1980, Taylor served as chairman of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland, highlighting his influence and leadership in the broader hymnological community. His legacy lies not only in the hymns he composed but also in his contributions to hymn editing, music education, and the promotion of worship that is both spiritually and musically engaging.
