About D. A. R. Aufranc

D. A. R. Aufranc (1892–1979)

Douglas Albert Raoul Aufranc was a British physician, dentist, and devoted hymn writer who played a distinctive role in the Adventist Church in the 20th century. Born in 1892 in London, Aufranc grew up in a family deeply rooted in the Adventist faith. His grandfather, a professor of languages and translator, was among the first European converts to the church, influenced by the missionary work of J. N. Andrews in Switzerland. This heritage nurtured both a commitment to faith and an appreciation for intellectual and artistic pursuits.

Aufranc trained and practiced as a physician and dentist, gaining recognition for his medical expertise. He served as an advisor for the Good Health Association, a network of Adventist medical institutions across Great Britain, promoting health and wellness in line with the church’s teachings. In 1937, at the coronation of King George VI, his article “Fighting against Death” was highlighted in a church commemorative magazine, This Century of Wonders, underscoring his influence as both a medical professional and spiritual communicator.

Beyond medicine, Aufranc was a prolific writer for Adventist publications, including the Advent Review and Sabbath Herald and Life and Health magazine, contributing articles, poems, and practical guidance on healthy living. Music, however, remained a personal passion. While he composed hymns for the Adventist Church, he also aspired to create popular music in the style of contemporary dance bands, reflecting a desire to connect with wider audiences through melody.

Aufranc’s hymns, such as “Alone with Thee, my God, in prayer” and “Far from all care we hail the Sabbath morning”, demonstrate his deep spiritual devotion and ability to combine faith with artistic expression. He passed away in 1979, leaving a legacy that bridged faith, music, and service to both church and community. His life exemplifies the harmonious pursuit of professional excellence, religious commitment, and creative expression.
