About Doris Akers

Doris Mae Akers (1923–1995), known as “Miss Gospel Music,” was a pioneering American gospel composer, arranger, choir director, and performer. She was born in Brookfield, Missouri, one of nine children. After her parents’ divorce, she was raised by her mother in Kirksville, Missouri, where she began playing piano by ear at age six and wrote her first song at ten. She formed a family gospel group called “Dot and the Swingsters” and later moved to Los Angeles in 1938, where she gained recognition directing the integrated Sky Pilot Choir. Her innovative arrangements of traditional spirituals attracted large congregations, and the choir released three albums and appeared on national radio and television.

Akers recorded solos and collaborated with prominent gospel artists, including the Statemen Quartet. She continued composing, recording, and performing after moving to Columbus, Ohio, in 1970, releasing annual gospel albums through the 1980s. In the 1990s, she recorded for the Gaither label and participated in their concerts and television productions. She served as Minister of Music at Grace Temple Deliverance Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was known for her mastery of vocalization, piano, choir direction, arranging, composing, and publishing.

Throughout her career, Akers wrote over 500 songs, many of which became standards in gospel music, including I am weak and I need your strength and power and There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place. She received numerous honors, including Gospel Music Composer of the Year (1960 and 1961), recognition by the Smithsonian Institution as “The Foremost Gospel Writer in the U.S.” (1992), and posthumous inductions into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2001) and Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2011). Her influence shaped generations of gospel musicians and left an enduring legacy in the field of sacred music.
