About Edward Osler

Edward Osler was born in January 1798 at Falmouth, England. He initially trained in the medical field under Dr. Carvosso in Falmouth and later at Guy's Hospital, London, serving as house surgeon at Swansea Infirmary from 1819 to 1836. After relocating to London, Osler devoted himself to literary and hymnological work, including associations with the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in London and Bath. In 1841, he became Editor of the Royal Cornwall Gazette and resided in Truro until his death on March 7, 1863.

Osler’s hymnological contributions are closely tied to the Mitre Hymn Book (1836), produced with Prebendary W. J. Hall, where he contributed 15 Psalm versions and 50 hymns. Many of these hymns, along with others not included in the Mitre Hymn Book, were later published in his periodical Church and King (1836–1837). His hymns demonstrate a careful attention to doctrinal themes, ranging from Advent and Easter to Holy Baptism, the Holy Trinity, and the Second Advent. Notable hymns include O God, unseen, yet ever near, Worship, honour, glory, blessing, Father, Whose love and truth fulfil, and Mighty Saviour, gracious King.

Though lesser-known today, Osler’s work remains influential, with one of his enduring contributions being the third stanza of Praise the Lord! Ye Heavens, Adore Him, widely used in worship despite the first two stanzas being of anonymous authorship. His hymns continue to be valued for their scriptural fidelity and devotional depth.
