About Eliza Roxcy Snow

Eliza R. Snow was a prominent American poet, hymn writer, and leader in the early Latter-day Saint (Mormon) movement. Born in 1804, she became known for her literary gifts, composing both devotional and celebratory hymns that emphasized faith, virtue, and the glory of God. Snow’s hymns often reflect themes of heavenly devotion, personal sanctification, Zion, and the eternal nature of God’s promises.

She was widely recognized in her lifetime for her poetic skill and deep theological insight, and her hymns became integral to Latter-day Saint worship. Among her most celebrated works are O my Father, Thou that dwellest In the high and glorious and Awake, ye saints of God, awake! Call on the Lord in mighty prayer, both of which are still sung in modern Latter-day Saint hymnals. She wrote over fifty hymns in English, with several also translated into Spanish for international use.

In addition to her literary contributions, Snow was an influential female leader, serving in the Relief Society, the women’s organization of the church, where she promoted education, charity, and spiritual development. Her writings and leadership helped shape the devotional life of her community, and she is remembered as both a spiritual guide and a literary figure of lasting significance.
