About Erik Routley

Erik Routley (1917–1982) was an English Congregational minister, theologian, musician, and one of the most influential hymnologists of the twentieth century. He was born on October 31, 1917, in Brighton, England, and educated at Lancing College before studying at Magdalen College and Mansfield College, Oxford. Ordained in 1943, he began his ministry in the Congregational Church of England and Wales, combining pastoral work with academic and musical interests that would shape his lifelong contribution to church music and hymnody.

Routley served in several pastorates, including Wednesbury, Dartford, Edinburgh, and Newcastle, while also holding academic roles at Mansfield College, Oxford, where he worked as chaplain, lecturer, librarian, and director of music. His doctoral research on church music became foundational for his later writings. Over time, he gained international recognition as a scholar and lecturer, eventually moving to the United States in 1975 to serve as Professor of Church Music and Director of Chapel at Westminster Choir College in Princeton.

He was an extraordinarily prolific writer and editor, producing nearly forty books on theology, hymnody, and church music. Routley also contributed to the development and editing of more than fifteen hymnals and supplements, helping to shape modern congregational singing. His work played a major role in what became known as the “hymn explosion” of the mid-twentieth century, influencing both British and American worship practices. In addition to his scholarly output, he composed over 100 hymn tunes and wrote or translated many hymn texts, several of which remain widely used today.

Routley was known for his deep insight into the relationship between music and theology, as well as for his engaging teaching and preaching style. He served as editor of the Bulletin of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland for many years and was widely respected as a leader in the study of hymnology. His influence extended across denominations and continents, particularly through his lectures, writings, and editorial work.

He died unexpectedly of a heart attack on October 8, 1982, in Nashville, Tennessee, while attending a church music conference. Despite his relatively early death, Erik Routley left a lasting legacy as a central figure in modern hymn studies and church music, remembered for both his scholarship and his practical impact on worship life.
