About Federico J. Pagura
Federico José Pagura (1923–2016) was an Argentine Methodist bishop, hymnist, and translator. Born in Argentina, he became a leading figure in the Methodist Church, contributing extensively to hymnody both in Spanish and English. Pagura’s work focused on translating classic hymns into Spanish and adapting Spanish hymns for use in broader congregational contexts, making Christian worship more accessible across language barriers.
Over his lifetime, he produced or translated over 150 hymn texts, including Spanish versions of “All People That on Earth Do Dwell”, “Be Thou My Vision”, and “Break Thou the Bread of Life”, as well as original Spanish compositions such as “Cuando las bases de este mundo tiemblan” and “Bendito el Rey que viene en el nombre del Señor!”. His translations are noted for maintaining theological accuracy while capturing the poetic and musical qualities of the originals. Pagura’s influence extended beyond hymnody; he was widely respected for his pastoral leadership, authorship, and advocacy for liturgical enrichment in the Latin American Methodist tradition.
