About Floyd W. Hawkins

Floyd W. Hawkins (1904–2002) was an influential American hymn writer, musician, and ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene, whose contributions to Christian music spanned much of the twentieth century. Born on November 20, 1904, in Pullman, Washington, Hawkins devoted his life to ministry and music, combining pastoral work with a remarkable gift for composing and publishing hymns. Over his lifetime, he wrote more than 500 songs, including notable works such as "I've Discovered the Way of Gladness," "The Crystal Fountain," "Let Thy Mantle Fall on Me," and "Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace." His music was known for its uplifting devotional quality and its ability to communicate biblical truth in an accessible, heartfelt manner.

In 1957, Hawkins became the music editor at Lillenas Publishing Company, a position he held until 1975. During this time, he influenced countless church musicians and worship leaders through both his editorial guidance and his own compositions. His work often emphasized the themes of God’s guidance, divine peace, and the believer’s journey of faith, making his hymns suitable for congregational singing as well as personal devotion. Many of his texts have been translated into other languages, including Spanish, reflecting their broad appeal across cultures and denominations.

Beyond his work in publishing and hymn composition, Hawkins was deeply committed to pastoral ministry, serving congregations with a focus on spiritual formation and encouragement. He combined his musical gifts with his pastoral heart, creating hymns that both edified and inspired. Floyd W. Hawkins passed away on July 17, 2002, in Springfield, Missouri, leaving behind a rich legacy of Christian music that continues to bless churches and believers worldwide. His hymns remain a testament to a lifetime of devotion to God, ministry, and the transformative power of song.
