About Frank von Christierson

Frank von Christierson (1900–1996) was a Finnish-born American Presbyterian minister and hymn writer whose life combined pastoral service, youth leadership, and contributions to hymnody. Born near Helsinki, he immigrated to the United States at the age of four and grew up in California. He graduated from San Jose High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Stanford University in 1923. He later pursued theological training at San Francisco Theological Seminary, receiving a Bachelor of Divinity in 1929. In recognition of his lifelong contributions, he was named a distinguished alumnus of the seminary in 1983 and became a Fellow of The Hymn Society.

Christierson served for thirty-seven years as a minister of the United Presbyterian Church, with pastorates in Berkeley, North Hollywood, and Sacramento, California. Beyond his pastoral duties, he was active in denominational leadership, serving as moderator of both the San Francisco and Los Angeles Presbyteries, and chaired radio and television programs for the Sacramento Area Council of Churches. Earlier in his ministry, he also worked as a youth director at First Presbyterian Church in San Luis Obispo and as pastor at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Citrus Heights, California. Even in retirement, he continued to serve as an interim minister in the Central Area of the Synod of California.

As a hymn writer, Frank von Christierson contributed to the development of contemporary hymnody in America. He published a hymnal collection, Make a Joyful Noise (1987), and his texts are represented in numerous denominational hymnals, including three in the Worship & Rejoice hymnal (2001). His hymns reflect both pastoral care and theological clarity, emphasizing worship, praise, and devotion. Through his writing, teaching, and pastoral work, Christierson left a lasting impact on both congregational life and the broader landscape of American hymnology.
