About Horatio Nelson

Horatio Nelson, 3rd Earl Nelson, was born on August 7, 1823, the son of Thomas Bolton of Burnham, Norfolk. He was a nephew of the famed Admiral Viscount Nelson, from whom he inherited the family name upon succeeding to the title as 2nd Earl. He received his education at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, preparing him for both public service and ecclesiastical engagement.

Earl Nelson was a devoted layman, deeply involved in church life and benevolent enterprises. His contributions to hymnology were significant, particularly through his work as an editor and compiler of hymnals. In 1857, at the request of the Bishop of Salisbury, he compiled the Salisbury Hymn Book, assisted by the Rev. John Keble, who reworked older hymns and translated selections from Latin. This hymnal was revised in 1868 and published as the Sarum Hymnal, which quickly gained wide popularity. He was assisted in this work by the Revs. J. R. Woodford and E. A. Dayman.

Earl Nelson also authored several devotional works, including A Form of Family Prayer, with Special Offices for the Seasons (1852) and A Calendar of Lessons for Every Day in the Year (1857). Among his hymns, he is best known for “From all Thy saints in warfare, for all Thy saints at rest”, first published in Hymn for Saint’s Day, and other Hymns (1864). Beyond hymnology, he was an active member of the Home Reunion Society and wrote extensively on Christian unity and related subjects.

Nelson passed away in 1913, leaving a lasting legacy as both a scholar of devotional literature and a compiler whose works shaped Anglican hymnody in the 19th century. His efforts in the Sarum Hymnal continue to be recognized as a high standard of editorial and devotional care.
