Ye Holy Angels Bright

By Richard Baxter

Lyrics

1. Ye holy angels bright,
who wait at God's right hand,
or through the realms of light
fly at your Lord's command,
assist our song,
for else the theme
too high doth seem
for mortal tongue.
2. Ye blessèd souls at rest,
who ran this earthly race,
and now, from sin released,
behold the Saviour's face,
his praises sound,
as in his sight
with sweet delight
ye do abound.
3. Ye saints, who toil below,
adore your heavenly King,
and onward as ye go
some joyful anthem sing;
take what he gives
and praise him still,
through good and ill,
who ever lives.
4. My soul, bear thou thy part,
triumph in God above,
and with a well-tuned heart
sing thou the songs of love;
let all thy days
till life shall end,
whate'er he send,
be filled with praise.

Psalm 148:1–5; Hebrews 1:6; Revelation 5:11–12; Psalm 103:20–22

About This Hymn

“Ye Holy Angels Bright” is a majestic hymn written by Richard Baxter, a prominent English Puritan pastor and theologian. The hymn is a call to universal praise, inviting both heavenly beings and earthly believers to join together in worship of God. Its message reflects a grand vision of creation united in giving glory to the Lord.

The opening theme draws from Psalm 148:1–5, which calls upon angels, heavenly hosts, and all creation to praise the name of the Lord. Baxter echoes this biblical summons by addressing angels first, urging them to lift their voices in joyful adoration. This aligns with Hebrews 1:6, where all the angels of God are commanded to worship Him.

The hymn then expands its call to include believers on earth, creating a sense of unity between heaven and earth in worship. This reflects the scene in Revelation 5:11–12, where countless angels surround the throne, praising the Lamb with loud voices. The hymn captures this heavenly chorus and invites the church to join in that same song of praise.

Another important theme is the obedience and readiness of angels, as described in Psalm 103:20–22, where they are portrayed as those who do God’s commandments and hearken to His word. By including angels in the hymn, Baxter highlights the perfection of their worship and sets an example for believers to follow.

“Ye Holy Angels Bright” remains a powerful hymn of praise because of its expansive vision and scriptural depth. It lifts the minds of worshipers beyond the immediate and earthly, directing their attention to the greater reality of God’s glory being proclaimed throughout heaven and earth. Through its message, the hymn calls all creation to unite in joyful and reverent worship of the Lord.
