Zacharias' Prophecy

By Bertus Frederick Polman

Lyrics

1.  Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
who has come to his people and set them free.
2.  He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour,
born of the house of his servant David.
3.  Through his holy prophets God promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all that hate us,
4.  To show mercy to our ancestors,
and to remember his holy covenant.
5.  This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham,
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
6.  Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
7.  And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
8. To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of all their sins.
9. In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

About This Hymn

“Zacharias' Prophecy” by Bertus Frederick Polman is a hymn that draws its text and inspiration from the Benedictus, the prophetic song spoken by Zacharias at the birth of John the Baptist. Found in Luke 1, this prophecy stands as a bridge between the Old Testament hopes of Israel and the coming fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Polman’s hymn reflects the richness of this biblical moment, capturing the joy, awe, and thanksgiving that filled Zacharias after the Lord restored his speech. The hymn highlights the faithfulness of God in keeping His promises to Abraham and David, building a strong link between the covenant made centuries earlier and its fulfillment through the arrival of the Messiah.

The hymn follows the structure of the Benedictus, beginning with praise to the God of Israel who has visited and redeemed His people. It presents the coming of Christ as the rising of a great light that brings salvation, deliverance from enemies, and the cleansing of sin. Through this sacred text, Polman invites worshippers to enter into the same gratitude Zacharias experienced when he saw the first signs of redemption taking shape. The hymn emphasizes God’s mercy, His remembrance of His covenant, and His desire to guide His people into lives marked by holiness and peace.

A significant portion of the Benedictus focuses on John the Baptist, the child who would go before the Lord to prepare His way. The hymn reflects this by acknowledging John’s calling to proclaim forgiveness and lead hearts toward repentance. Yet the focus always returns to Christ, the true Light who brings salvation to those in darkness and in the shadow of death. This makes the hymn suitable for seasons such as Advent, Baptism of Christ, or any service that centers on the coming of the Savior and the preparation of the human heart to receive Him.

Musically, settings of “Zacharias' Prophecy” often take a reflective and reverent tone, allowing the depth of the biblical text to shine through. The solemn joy of Zacharias is conveyed through melodies that emphasize hope and gratitude rather than exuberance. Congregations find in this hymn a powerful retelling of God’s saving plan and a reminder that the fulfillment of His promises brings light, guidance, and peace. Through its scriptural faithfulness and thoughtful expression, the hymn continues to lead believers to praise the God who remembers His people and brings redemption through His Son.
