A Glorious Church
By R. E. Hudson
Lyrics
thronging up the steeps of light,
clad in glorious, shining garments—
blood-washed garments pure and white?
'Tis a glorious church without spot or wrinkle,
washed in the blood of the Lamb.
'Tis a glorious church without spot of wrinkle,
washed in the blood of the Lamb.
filling all the earth and sky?
'Tis a grand, victorious army,
lift its banner up on high!
never fear the storms of sin.
We shall triumph on the morrow;
even now our joys begin.
for our victory is nigh!
We shall join our conqu'ring Savior;
we shall reign with Him on high!

About This Hymn
R. E. Hudson, a Methodist minister and musician, wrote both the words and music for “A Glorious Church”, a triumphant hymn based on Ephesians 5:27 (KJV):
“That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”
This verse inspired Hudson to create a hymn celebrating the purity, victory, and destiny of the Church—the Body of Christ—as it is being prepared for Christ, the Bridegroom. Written in an energetic, marching style, the hymn was likely intended for revival meetings and camp meetings, where such strong, joyful themes were common.
The refrain—**“’Tis a glorious church without spot or wrinkle, washed in the blood of the Lamb”—**repeats the central message that the Church, though made up of redeemed sinners, is made holy and radiant by the cleansing power of Christ’s blood.
Hudson was known for compiling and editing songbooks, and “A Glorious Church” became one of his most enduring contributions to American hymnody. The song gained popularity in holiness and evangelical circles, particularly for its strong doctrinal emphasis on sanctification and the Church’s future glory.
