All My Hope on God Is Founded

By Joachim Neander

Lyrics

1. All my hope on God is founded;
he doth still my trust renew.
Me through change and chance he guideth,
only good and only true.
God unknown,
he alone
calls my heart to be his own.
2. Human pride and earthly glory,
sword and crown betray his trust;
what with care and toil he buildeth,
tower and temple, fall to dust.
But God's power,
hour by hour,
is my temple and my tower.
3. God's great goodness aye endureth,
deep his wisdom, passing thought:
splendour, light, and life attend him,
beauty springeth out of naught.
Evermore
from his store
new-born worlds rise and adore.
4. Daily doth th' Almighty giver
bounteous gifts on us bestow;
his desire our soul delighteth,
pleasure leads us where we go.
Love doth stand
at his hand;
joy doth wait on his command.
5. Still from earth to God eternal
sacrifice of praise be done,
high above all praises praising
for the gift of Christ his Son.
Christ doth call
one and all:
ye who follow shall not fall.

About This Hymn

“All My Hope on God Is Founded” is a treasured hymn that reflects the beauty of trust in the Lord who remains unchanging when everything else shifts like sand. The English text was written by Robert Bridges, the English poet laureate, who adapted it from the seventeenth century German hymn “Meine Hoffnung stehet feste,” written by Joachim Neander. Bridges did not simply translate the original poem. Instead, he shaped it with poetic sensitivity so that English speaking congregations could sing the message of confidence in God with clarity and devotion. His version preserves the heart of Neander’s theme, the call to place complete trust in God rather than in wealth, human power, or earthly accomplishments.

The hymn begins by lifting the soul to remember that true hope is found only in God, the one who guides, supports, and sustains His people. Earthly treasures quickly fade and human strength falters, but the Lord remains firm, faithful, and dependable. The message echoes the tone of the Psalms, especially Psalm sixty two, which urges the believer to rest fully upon God for salvation and refuge. Each stanza points to the loving care of the Lord who rules with wisdom and goodness. His blessings flow from His character, not from the shifting conditions of life. Therefore, the hymn teaches believers to place their confidence in the divine Shepherd rather than the passing security of the world.

The tune most often paired with this hymn, known as “Michael,” was composed by Herbert Howells in memory of his son. Its soaring movement and rich harmony support the text with a sense of reverent strength. Together, the words and melody create a hymn that encourages worshipers to rest in God’s unchanging love. It reminds the church that hope grounded in the Lord cannot be shaken because He alone is the source of life, joy, and eternal peace.
