An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare

By Fred Pratt Green

Lyrics

1. An Upper Room did our Lord prepare
for those he loved until the end:
and his disciples still gather there
to celebrate their Risen Friend.
2. A lasting gift Jesus gave his own:
to share his bread, his loving cup.
Whatever burdens may bow us down,
he by his Cross shall lift us up.
3. And after Supper he washed their feet,
for service, too, is sacrament.
In him our joy shall be made complete —
sent out to serve, as he was sent.
4. No end there is! We depart in peace.
He loves beyond the uttermost:
in every room in our Father's house
he will be there, as Lord and Host.

About This Hymn

“An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare” is a modern hymn by Fred Pratt Green, one of the most influential British hymn writers of the twentieth century. Green’s work is characterized by theological depth, pastoral insight, and accessibility for congregational singing. This hymn focuses on the institution of the Lord’s Supper, the sacred meal that Jesus shared with His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. It is rooted in Scripture, drawing from Luke’s account of the Passover meal, John’s narrative of Christ washing the disciples’ feet, and Paul’s instruction to the Corinthian church about remembering the Lord’s death.

The hymn invites worshipers to enter into the Upper Room spiritually, reflecting on the humility, service, and love demonstrated by Christ. Green emphasizes the enduring significance of the Eucharist as both a memorial and a present experience, reminding believers that through the bread and wine, they participate in Christ’s body and blood and receive the assurance of forgiveness and grace. Each stanza of the hymn calls the congregation to consider the fellowship and unity that the Lord’s Supper fosters, not only between Christ and His disciples, but among all members of the church across time and space.

Musically, the hymn is often paired with a tune that supports reflective yet communal singing, allowing the congregation to engage fully in the sacred act of remembrance. The text balances reverence with clarity, making the profound truths of Christ’s love and sacrifice accessible for worshipers of all ages. “An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare” remains a meaningful hymn for Maundy Thursday, communion services, and any worship setting that seeks to honor Christ’s self-giving love, reminding believers of the call to serve one another in humility and devotion.
