Awake, My Heart, with Gladness
Lyrics
see what today is done!
Now, after gloom and sadness,
comes forth the glorious sun.
My Savior there was laid
where our bed must be made
when to the realms of light
our spirit wings its flight.
when Christ lay in the tomb;
but lo, he now is routed,
his boast is turned to gloom.
For Christ again is free;
in glorious victory
he who is strong to save
has triumphed o'er the grave.
what peace it does impart!
Now nothing ever saddens
the joy within my heart.
No gloom shall ever shake,
no foe shall ever take
the hope which God's own Son
in love for me has won.
to Christ, my Savior dear,
My Lord will leave me never;
with him I need not fear.
He rends death's iron chain;
he breaks through sin and pain.
He shatters hell's dark thrall;
I follow Him through all.
that leads to bliss untold,
whereon this rhyme immortal
is found in script of gold:
"Who there my cross has shared
finds here a crown prepared;
who there with me has died
shall here be glorified."

About This Hymn
“Awake, My Heart, with Gladness” was written in 1647 by Paul Gerhardt, one of the most treasured Lutheran hymn writers of the seventeenth century. Composed in the aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War, the hymn reflects deep personal faith formed amid suffering and loss. It is a rich Easter hymn celebrating Christ’s resurrection and the believer’s share in that victory.
The opening call to awaken echoes the joy of the resurrection morning recorded in Matthew 28:5-6, where the angel declares, “He is not here: for he is risen” (KJV). Gerhardt summons his own heart to rejoice because Christ has triumphed over the grave. The resurrection is not distant history but present comfort and assurance.
First Corinthians 15:20-22 proclaims Christ as the firstfruits of them that slept, affirming that as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Gerhardt’s hymn develops this union with Christ. Because the Savior lives, believers share in His victory. Death is no longer a final defeat but a conquered enemy.
Romans 6:4-5 teaches that believers are buried with Christ by baptism into death and raised to walk in newness of life. The hymn reflects this transformation. Gerhardt connects Christ’s resurrection with the believer’s daily life, encouraging confidence, courage, and hope grounded in union with the risen Lord.
Colossians 3:1-4 calls Christians to seek the things above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. The hymn directs attention upward, reminding believers that their life is hid with Christ in God. This heavenly perspective strengthens faith amid earthly trials.
“Awake, My Heart, with Gladness” is cherished in Lutheran and other Protestant traditions as a profound expression of Easter joy. Its theology is deeply biblical, combining doctrinal clarity with personal devotion. Through vivid imagery and heartfelt praise, Gerhardt invites believers to rejoice in Christ’s resurrection and to live confidently in the hope of eternal life secured by their victorious Savior.
