Benedicamus Domino
By James Vila Blake
Lyrics
An angel brought me news to keep.
He said, There shall be born this night
A little child of love and light.
Refrain:
Glory on high, and peace below,
O Benedicamus Domino!
2 He said, The Child lies in the stall,
But He shall bless the wide world all.
I saw the stall and holy Child;
I could not leave that presence mild.
3 The Child upon me turned His eye,
And in His hand my heart laid I.
When I went home the Child with me
Went, and would never parted be.
4 O holy Child, I hallow Thee,
And joyful is my heart in me.
Glory on high, and peace below,
O Benedicamus Domino!

About This Hymn
"Benedicamus Domino," meaning "Let us bless the Lord," is a hymn written by James Vila Blake, a 19th-century American Unitarian minister, poet, and hymn writer. Blake was known for his devotional writings and for shaping hymn texts that expressed reverence, gratitude, and moral earnestness. This particular hymn reflects his ability to combine simplicity with deep theological significance.
The text is structured as a call to worship, beginning with the Latin phrase that summons believers to lift their voices in praise. It celebrates God’s goodness, creation, and sustaining power, and urges all people to unite in thanksgiving. The focus of the hymn is not on complex doctrinal detail but on heartfelt devotion, emphasizing that blessing the Lord is the natural response of grateful souls.
While Blake’s Unitarian background shaped much of his writing, "Benedicamus Domino" has been appreciated across Christian traditions for its biblical resonance and poetic quality. The use of the Latin title gives the hymn a timeless, liturgical feel, connecting it with centuries of Christian worship, while the verses themselves maintain clarity and accessibility. In congregational singing, the hymn has often been paired with traditional tunes that highlight its reverent and uplifting tone, making it suitable for both ordinary worship and festive occasions.
