God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

By Anonymous

Lyrics

1. God rest you merry, gentlemen,
let nothing you dismay,
remember Christ our Savior
was born on Christmas Day
to save us all from Satan's pow'r
when we were gone astray.
Refrain:
O tidings of comfort and joy,
comfort and joy;
O tidings of comfort and joy.
2. From God our heav'nly Father
a blessed angel came
and unto certain shepherds
brought tidings of the same;
how that in Bethlehem was born
the Son of God by name.
3. "Fear not," then said the angel,
"Let nothing you affright;
this day is born a Savior
of a pure virgin bright,
to free all those who trust in Him
from Satan's pow'r and might."
4. The shepherds at those tidings
rejoiced much in mind,
and left their flocks afeeding,
in tempest, storm, and wind,
and went to Bethlehem straightway,
this blessed Babe to find.
5. Now to the Lord sing praises
all you within this place,
and with true love and brotherhood
each other now embrace;
this holy tide of Christmas
all other doth deface.

About This Hymn

“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” is one of the oldest and most beloved English Christmas carols, carrying a message of joy and reassurance rooted in the Gospel of Christ’s birth. Its origins stretch back to at least the 16th century, and it was first published in print in William Sandys’ Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern in 1833. The hymn’s opening line is often misunderstood, as the phrase “God rest ye merry” means “May God keep you joyful” rather than referring to merriment as a lighthearted activity. This understanding reflects the carol’s true intent, offering a blessing of spiritual rest and cheer to believers through the good news of the Savior’s coming. The song’s language, both archaic and poetic, carries with it a timeless warmth and dignity that has helped it remain a cherished part of Christmas celebrations for centuries.

The carol’s verses recount the message of the angels to the shepherds, emphasizing Christ’s birth as the source of comfort and salvation. It focuses not only on the historical nativity event but also on the broader hope it brings to humanity, reminding believers that they need not “dismay” because God Himself came in flesh to redeem His people. Each stanza ends with a refrain of “O tidings of comfort and joy,” reinforcing the theme that the incarnation of Christ brings deep spiritual peace and eternal hope. The melody, in its traditional minor key, gives the hymn a striking and solemn yet joyful character, a blend that sets it apart from many other Christmas carols. This combination of melody and message has allowed “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” to endure for centuries in both church worship and popular culture.

This carol also reflects a fascinating history of English worship practices, as it was originally sung by common people rather than clergy or choirs. Unlike some hymns that were confined to church settings, “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” was part of a tradition of “wassailing” songs, in which groups of carolers brought Christmas cheer to homes and communities. Its survival through the Reformation and its later inclusion in Victorian hymnals demonstrate its universal appeal and deep theological foundation. Today, this hymn remains a powerful reminder of the joy and comfort found in Christ’s birth, carrying with it both a rich heritage and a message that continues to encourage believers in every generation.
