God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending

By Robert L. Edwards

Lyrics

1. God, whose giving knows no ending,
From Your rich and endless store:
Nature's wonder, Jesus' wisdom,
Costly cross, grave's shattered door,
Gifted by You, we turn to You,
Off'ring up ourselves in praise;
Thankful song shall rise forever,
Gracious donor of our days.
2. Skills and time are ours for pressing
Toward the goals of Christ, Your Son:
All at peace in health and freedom,
Races joined, the Church made one.
Now direct our daily labor,
Lest we strive for self alone;
Born with talents, make us servants
Fit to answer at Your throne.
3. Treasure, too, You have entrusted,
Gain through pow'rs Your grace conferred;
Ours to use for home and kindred,
And to spread the gospel word.
Open wide our hands in sharing,
As we heed Christ's ageless call,
Healing, teaching, and reclaiming,
Serving You by loving all.

About This Hymn

“God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending” is a hymn of thanksgiving and stewardship written by Robert L. Edwards in 1961. The text reflects a biblical theology of generosity rooted in the character of God Himself. Edwards composed the hymn to help congregations connect acts of giving with worship, showing that generosity is not merely a duty but a response to God’s abundant grace.

The hymn begins by affirming that all giving originates with God. Every good gift flows from His love, provision, and faithfulness. This emphasis guards against pride and self-sufficiency, reminding believers that human generosity is always a reflection of divine generosity. God is presented not as a reluctant giver, but as one whose giving is continual and gracious.

A major theme of the hymn is stewardship shaped by discipleship. Edwards emphasizes that giving involves more than money alone. Time, talents, and service are included as gifts entrusted to believers for the good of others. This broad understanding of stewardship reflects New Testament teaching that Christian life itself is an offering made in gratitude to God.

The hymn also connects generosity with Christ’s self-giving. The ultimate example of giving is found in Christ, who gave Himself for the salvation of the world. By grounding stewardship in the cross, the hymn avoids moralism and centers giving within the gospel. Believers are invited to give freely because they have first received freely.

“God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending” is especially suited for services focused on stewardship, thanksgiving, and Christian service. Its clear biblical foundation and practical application make it a lasting resource for congregational worship. The hymn continues to remind the church that faithful giving is a joyful response to the boundless generosity of God.
