Heavenly Father, Hear Our Prayer

By Barbara E. Adam

Lyrics

1. Heav’nly Father, hear our prayer
As we bow before You:
Bless them in the life they share,
Humble we implore You.
Be their guide in all endeavors,
Be their hope that nothing severs;
Constant source of love divine,
Let Your love within them shine!

2 As they pledge their love this day
Here before Your altar,
May their hearts, upon You stayed,
Never fail or falter.
Be their comfort in all sorrow;
Be their reason for tomorrow.
Grant them strength to live each hour
Trusting solely in Your pow’r.

3 Blest Creator, Lord of life,
Hear our glad thanksgiving.
Husband You have joined to wife
For their earthly living.
Justified by Jesus’ merit,
Life eternal they inherit.
When their days on earth have passed,
Take them to Your home at last!

About This Hymn

“Heavenly Father, Hear Our Prayer” is a devotional hymn written by Barbara E. Adam in 1975. The hymn emphasizes earnest petition and trust in God’s attentive care, offering a model for congregational or personal prayer. Adam’s text encourages believers to approach God with both reverence and confidence, reflecting the biblical principle that He listens to and answers the prayers of His children.

The hymn opens with a heartfelt appeal, inviting worshipers to present their needs, concerns, and thanksgiving to God. It emphasizes that prayer is both a right and a privilege of the believer, rooted in God’s loving character and faithfulness. By addressing God directly, the hymn fosters a sense of intimacy and dependence.

A central theme of the hymn is God’s responsiveness. While acknowledging human frailty and the challenges of life, Adam highlights the certainty that God hears and cares for His people. The text draws on biblical assurances that God’s attention is personal and that He provides guidance, comfort, and deliverance according to His wisdom.

The hymn also encourages persistence and sincerity in prayer. Worshipers are called to bring their hearts fully before God, trusting Him with both the burdens and joys of life. The repeated refrain and accessible structure make it suitable for corporate worship, devotional gatherings, or private meditation.

“Heavenly Father, Hear Our Prayer” continues to be valued for its simplicity, scriptural grounding, and pastoral warmth. It serves as a reminder that prayer is a continual, trusting dialogue with God, inviting believers to rely on His care and to seek His presence in every circumstance.
