I Plead for Grace

By Joseph Tyrpak

Lyrics

1. I plead for grace, O God of steadfast love;
by Your great mercy, all my sin remove.
Deeply ashamed for spurning You alone,
I stand condemned before Your holy throne.
2. Though You want truth and purity within,
I am unclean, conceived with inborn sin.
Purge me with blood, and wash me white as snow.
Hide my transgressions; heal my broken soul.
3. Create in me a spotless heart, I pray.
Take not Your Spirit! Case me not away!
Restore to me salvation's joy anew,
then I will teach the lost to turn to You.
4. Save me, O God—with blood my hands are stained!
Open my lips to praise Your righteous name.
Though You reject a thoughtless sacrifice,
my broken, contrite heart You'll not despise.
5. Lord, in Your goodness, build up Zion's walls.
Let not my sin tear down Your glorious cause.
May You delight in every sacrifice,
offered by sinners You have purified.
6. God can be just and sinners justify,
for Jesus bled God's wrath to satisfy.
My sins the spikes that nailed Christ to the tree—
God's love and justice there for all to see.

About This Hymn

I Plead for Grace is a contemporary hymn text by Joseph Tyrpak that centers on the biblical doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone. The hymn is written as a personal prayer of confession and humble appeal, echoing the posture of the repentant sinner who comes before God with no claim of merit, trusting solely in divine mercy. Its language and structure closely reflect the penitential prayers of Scripture, particularly David’s plea in Psalm 51 and the tax collector’s cry in Luke 18:13, “God be merciful to me a sinner.”

The hymn’s opening emphasis on pleading rather than proving is theologically significant. It reinforces the biblical teaching that salvation is not earned by works, reform, or religious performance, but is granted freely by God’s grace on the basis of Christ’s atoning work. This aligns directly with Paul’s teaching in Romans 3:23-26, where justification is presented as a gift, grounded in the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Tyrpak’s text carefully avoids any suggestion of human contribution, keeping the focus on God’s mercy and righteousness.

Another strong theme in the hymn is honest self-examination. The sinner approaches God without disguise or excuse, acknowledging guilt and spiritual poverty. This confessional tone makes the hymn especially suitable for use in services of repentance, communion, or personal devotion. At the same time, the plea for grace is not expressed in despair, but in confidence, because God has revealed Himself as gracious and forgiving through Christ.

The hymn also serves a catechetical purpose. By repeatedly directing the singer’s hope away from self and toward God’s saving action, it reinforces the gospel message articulated in Ephesians 2:8-9, that salvation is by grace through faith, not of works, lest any man should boast. In this way, I Plead for Grace functions not only as a prayer but also as a doctrinally clear statement of evangelical faith.

I Plead for Grace stands as a thoughtful modern hymn text that faithfully carries forward classic Protestant theology in accessible language. Its simplicity, scriptural grounding, and reverent tone make it a valuable resource for congregations seeking to sing biblically about repentance, mercy, and the sufficiency of God’s grace in Christ.
