Jesus, Priceless Treasure

By Johann Franck

Lyrics

1. Jesus, priceless treasure,
source of purest pleasure,
friend most sure and true:
long my heart was burning,
fainting much and yearning,
thirsting, Lord, for you.
Yours I am, O spotless Lamb,
so will I let nothing hide you,
seek no joy beside you!
2. Let your arms enfold me:
those who try to wound me
cannot reach me here.
Though the earth be shaking,
every heart be quaking,
Jesus calms my fear.
Fires may flash and thunder crash;
yea, though sin and hell assail me,
Jesus will not fail me.
3. Hence, all worldly treasure!
Jesus is my pleasure,
Jesus is my choice.
Hence, all empty glory!
What to me your story
told with tempting voice?
Pain or loss or shame or cross
shall not from my Savior move me,
since he chose to love me.
4. Banish thoughts of sadness,
for the Lord of gladness,
Jesus, enters in;
though the clouds may gather,
those who love the Savior
still have peace within.
Though I bear much sorrow here,
still in you lies purest pleasure,
Jesus, priceless treasure!

About This Hymn

“Jesus, Priceless Treasure” is one of the finest devotional hymns of the seventeenth century, expressing a deep and personal love for Christ as the supreme joy and possession of the believer. Written by Johann Franck, a German poet and civic leader, the hymn reflects the rich Lutheran piety of its time, marked by heartfelt devotion, scriptural depth, and an intense focus on union with Christ. Rather than addressing Christ in distant theological terms, Franck speaks directly to Him with affection, reverence, and unwavering trust.

The central theme of the hymn is the incomparable worth of Jesus Christ. Drawing from the apostle Paul’s testimony that all things are loss compared to knowing Christ, the hymn proclaims that nothing on earth can rival the value of the Savior. Wealth, honor, pleasure, and even life itself are counted as secondary when placed beside Christ. This echoes Christ’s parable of the treasure hidden in a field, for which a man gladly gives up everything else. Franck presents this truth not as mere doctrine, but as lived conviction.

The hymn also reflects a strong sense of assurance. Christ is not only precious, but faithful, present, and sufficient in every circumstance. Whether in suffering, loss, or the approach of death, the believer rests securely in Christ’s love. This confidence was especially meaningful in an era marked by war, instability, and widespread hardship. The hymn teaches that true peace is found not in outward conditions, but in belonging wholly to Jesus.

The language of the hymn is intimate and lyrical, often using imagery drawn from Scripture to express closeness and devotion. Christ is portrayed as the soul’s delight, refuge, and eternal portion. This devotional tone has made the hymn enduringly beloved for both personal meditation and congregational worship. Its focus naturally leads the heart toward gratitude, surrender, and joyful perseverance.

Theologically, “Jesus, Priceless Treasure” affirms a Christ centered faith that values communion with the Savior above all else. It reminds believers that faith is not merely assent to truth, but loving attachment to a Person. Through its rich poetry and biblical foundation, the hymn continues to call believers to treasure Christ above all things, to cling to Him in life and death, and to confess with confidence that He alone is enough.
