Jingle Bells
By James Lord Pierpont
Lyrics
In a one-horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bob tail ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight!
Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way.
Oh! what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh. Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way;
Oh! what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon, Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side,
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
He got into a drifted bank
And then we got upsot.
Jingle all the way.
Oh! what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh. Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way;
Oh! what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
The story I must tell
I went out on the snow,
And on my back I fell;
A gent was riding by
In a one-horse open sleigh,
He laughed as there I sprawling lie,
But quickly drove away. Ah!
Jingle all the way.
Oh! what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh. Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way;
Oh! what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Go it while you're young,
Take the girls tonight
and sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bobtailed bay
Two forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh
And snap! You'll take the lead.

About This Hymn
“Jingle Bells” is one of the most widely recognized Christmas songs in the world, although it was not originally written as a Christmas carol. James Lord Pierpont composed it in 1857 under the title One Horse Open Sleigh. The song was first performed at a Thanksgiving program in Savannah, Georgia, where Pierpont served as a music director. Its popularity quickly grew, and it became permanently associated with the Christmas season because of its winter imagery, sleigh rides, and festive cheer.
The song captures the joy of sleigh riding during the snowy season, filled with energy, lightheartedness, and the thrill of dashing “through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh.” Unlike traditional hymns or sacred carols, “Jingle Bells” does not focus on the nativity story or Christian theology, but its infectious melody and rhythm have made it a central part of holiday celebrations in both secular and religious contexts.
Over the years, “Jingle Bells” has been adapted and recorded by countless choirs, orchestras, and popular artists across nearly every genre of music. It was even the first song broadcast from space in 1965, when astronauts aboard Gemini 6 played a prank by performing it with a harmonica and sleigh bells. Today it remains a seasonal favorite for children and adults alike, embodying the playful and communal spirit of the holiday season.
