Lord, I Hear Of Show'rs Of Blessing
By Elizabeth Codner
Lyrics
Thou art scatt’ring full and free,
Show’rs the thirsty land refreshing;
Let some drops now fall on me.
Even me, even me,
Let some drops now fall on me.
Sinful though my heart may be;
Thou might’st leave me, but the rather
Let Thy mercy fall on me.
Let me love and cling to Thee;
I am longing for Thy favor;
While Thou’rt calling, call for me.
Thou canst make the blind to see;
By the Witness of Thy merit,
Speak the word of power to me.
Blood of Christ, so rich and free!
Grace of God, so strong and boundless!
Magnify them all in me.
Bind my heart, O Lord, to Thee;
While the streams of life are springing,
Blessing others, oh, bless me

About This Hymn
“Even Me” is a heartfelt prayer hymn written by Elizabeth Codner, an English hymn writer, in 1860. Codner was deeply concerned about the spiritual state of young people, and this hymn grew out of her work with youth groups in England. The title and refrain, “Even me,” reflect the humble longing of a soul that knows Christ’s blessings are real but wonders, with reverent awe, if such grace can reach down to one so small and unworthy.
The opening stanza paints the image of divine blessing described as showers, flowing freely from heaven, nourishing and reviving all around. The singer pleads that these blessings may not pass them by but fall upon “even me.” Each stanza continues the theme with earnest petitions: that the love, mercy, and cleansing power of Christ might be experienced personally. This repeated plea highlights the personal application of the gospel message. While God’s love is wide enough to embrace the world, it is also close enough to reach each individual heart.
“Even Me” quickly became one of the most beloved hymns of the nineteenth century, often sung in revival meetings and prayer gatherings. Its strength lies in its simplicity: the combination of a childlike prayer, a repeated plea, and a confidence that God’s mercy truly extends to all who call upon Him. Its scriptural foundation is broad, drawing from promises such as Isaiah 44:3, “I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground,” and John 6:37, “Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”
Elizabeth Codner’s hymn continues to resonate with believers who sometimes feel overlooked or unworthy. The refrain “Even me” serves as a reminder that no one is outside the reach of Christ’s redeeming love. God’s grace is not limited to the strong, the famous, or the outwardly righteous, but is poured out abundantly for the weak, the humble, and the seeking soul. Through this hymn, Christians are encouraged to lift their hearts in faith, trusting that God’s blessings are indeed for them personally.
