Frances Brook was the daughter of Reverend James Brook and belonged to a family with strong missionary ties. While her delicate health prevented her from traveling overseas in missionary work like her sisters, she gave voice to her devotion through hymns. This hymn, in particular, captures the heart of her faith: the assurance that God Himself is the greatest reward.

The opening line, “My goal is God Himself, not joy, nor peace, nor even blessing, but Himself, my God,” makes the theme unmistakable.
