My Goal Is God Himself
By Frances Brook
Lyrics
Nor even blessing, but Himself, my God;
’Tis His to lead me there—not mine, but His—
At any cost, dear Lord, by any road.
And love can trust her Lord to lead her there;
Upheld by Him, my soul is following hard
Till God hath full fulfilled my deepest prayer.
No matter though the cost be oft-times great,
He knoweth how I best shall reach the mark,
The way that leads to Him must needs be strait.
One thing I do, I press towards my Lord;
My God my glory here, from day to day,
And in the glory there my great Reward.

About This Hymn
“My Goal Is God Himself” is a hymn written by Frances Brook in April 1896. It arose from a deep spiritual longing to seek God above all else, not merely the blessings, comforts, or rewards that often capture a believer’s focus. Brook’s words highlight the desire for a relationship with God Himself as the ultimate pursuit of the Christian life.
Frances Brook was the daughter of Reverend James Brook and belonged to a family with strong missionary ties. While her delicate health prevented her from traveling overseas in missionary work like her sisters, she gave voice to her devotion through hymns. This hymn, in particular, captures the heart of her faith: the assurance that God Himself is the greatest reward.
The opening line, “My goal is God Himself, not joy, nor peace, nor even blessing, but Himself, my God,” makes the theme unmistakable. Each stanza emphasizes surrender, perseverance, and trust, even when the road is difficult. The repeated resolve, “at any cost, dear Lord, by any road,” shows a willingness to follow Christ no matter the circumstances. It reflects the teaching of John 12:26, where Jesus declares that those who serve Him must follow Him, and that the Father will honor them.
Despite life’s uncertainties, Brook affirms that God knows the way and that He Himself is both the path and the prize. The hymn continues to inspire believers to look beyond earthly desires and fix their eyes on God, trusting Him fully as the ultimate goal of life and faith.
