Under His Wings
Lyrics
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me.
He has redeemed me, and I am His child.
Under His wings, under His wings,
who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
safely abide forever.
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
there I find comfort, and there I am blest.
There will I hide till life’s trials are o’er;
sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me.
Resting in Jesus, I’m safe evermore.

About This Hymn
"Under His Wings" is a tender and comforting hymn written by William Orcutt Cushing, a 19th-century American hymn writer known for his deeply devotional and emotionally rich texts. This particular hymn draws its imagery directly from Psalm 91:4, portraying God as a divine protector who shelters His children beneath His wings. This metaphor, rooted in biblical truth, evokes the care of a mother bird shielding her young, offering believers assurance of safety, rest, and intimacy in God's presence.
William O. Cushing penned this hymn during the later years of his life after he had retired from ministry due to declining health. Despite physical challenges, his faith remained strong, and he devoted himself to writing hymns that would uplift and encourage others in their walk with Christ. "Under His Wings" is among his most beloved compositions and reflects a heart that had personally experienced the sustaining comfort of God amid trial and weakness.
The hymn opens with the line, “Under His wings I am safely abiding,” setting the tone of serene refuge. Each stanza progresses through expressions of assurance, deliverance from fear, and quiet rest, reinforcing the believer’s secure position in God’s care. The second verse emphasizes the reality that while the storms of life may rage and the night may be dark, the soul who abides under God's wings is safe and at peace. This truth is repeated and reinforced in the refrain: “Under His wings, under His wings, who from His love can sever?”
The third verse celebrates the love of a Savior who gave Himself for His people, reminding the singer that the Lord not only protects but also redeems and holds us close. The image of protection becomes personal and deeply emotional, emphasizing not only safety but also the depth of Christ’s love and the intimacy of that relationship.
The music was composed by Ira D. Sankey (1840–1908), the famed gospel singer and composer who worked alongside evangelist Dwight L. Moody. Sankey’s melody is gentle and flowing, perfectly suited to the hymn’s theme of shelter and peace. His musical setting enhances the reflective tone of the lyrics, making it a favorite for times of quiet worship and moments when the heart longs for reassurance.
"Under His Wings" became especially popular in times of national crisis, personal sorrow, and spiritual reflection. It has been sung at funerals, in hospital rooms, and in personal devotion, always offering the same truth: that God's care is real, His presence is near, and His wings are strong enough to hold us through every storm.
Though Cushing wrote many hymns in his lifetime, including “Hiding in Thee” and “There’ll Be No Dark Valley,” “Under His Wings” remains one of the most cherished. Its enduring popularity testifies to its timeless message and its ability to speak peace to anxious hearts across generations.
This hymn continues to be a precious reminder for believers that God is not distant, but near, and He lovingly covers His people with His wings, offering refuge, strength, and comfort through all the seasons of life.
