My God, How Wonderful Thou Art

By Frederick William Faber

Lyrics

1. My God, how wonderful Thou art,
Thy majesty how bright,
How beautiful Thy mercy seat,
in depths of burning light!
2. How dread are Thine eternal years,
O everlasting LORD;
by prostrate spirits, day and night,
incessantly adored.
3. How wonderful, how beautiful,
the sight of Thee must be,
Thine endless wisdom, boundless pow'r,
and awful purity.
4. O how I fear Thee, Living God,
with deepest, tend'rest fears,
and worship Thee with trembling hope,
and penitential tears.
5. Yet I may love Thee too, O LORD,
Almighty as Thou art;
for Thou hast stooped to ask of me
the love of my poor heart.
6. No earthly father loves like Thee,
no mother e’er so mild,
bears and forbears, as Thou hast done
with me, Thy sinful child.
7. Father of Jesus, love's reward,
what rapture will it be,
prostrate before Thy throne to lie,
and ever gaze on Thee!

Psalm 145:3; Isaiah 6:1–5; 1 John 3:1–2; Revelation 15:3–4

About This Hymn

“My God, How Wonderful Thou Art” is a deeply reverent and contemplative hymn by Frederick William Faber that reflects on the majesty, holiness, and love of God. The hymn expresses a sense of awe before the greatness of God, combined with a humble awareness of human unworthiness.

The opening theme aligns with Psalm 145:3, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.” Faber emphasizes that God’s nature is beyond full human comprehension, inspiring wonder and adoration. This sense of awe is further reflected in Isaiah 6:1–5, where the prophet Isaiah beholds the holiness of God and becomes deeply aware of his own sinfulness. The hymn captures this contrast between divine holiness and human frailty.

At the same time, the hymn is not only about reverence but also about love. It reflects the truth of 1 John 3:1–2, which speaks of the incredible privilege of being called children of God. Despite His greatness, God draws near to His people in grace and love, inviting them into relationship with Him.

The hymn also anticipates the eternal praise of God, as seen in Revelation 15:3–4, where His works are described as great and marvelous, and all nations will come and worship Him. This forward-looking perspective adds depth to the hymn, connecting present worship with the future reality of heaven.

“My God, How Wonderful Thou Art” remains a cherished hymn because of its balance of awe, humility, and love. It leads worshipers to reflect on the greatness of God while also rejoicing in His gracious relationship with His people, inspiring both reverence and heartfelt devotion.
