Saved by the Blood (That Was Drawn)
By Fanny J. Crosby
Lyrics
That was drawn from the side
Of Jesus our Lord,
When He languished and died.
Hallelujah to God,
For redemption so free;
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
Dear Savior, to Thee.
Of the Lamb that was slain;
He conquered the grave,
And He liveth again.
We are sealed by its power;
’Tis life to the soul,
And is hope every hour.
Where the vilest may go
And wash till their souls
Shall be whiter than snow.
Hallelujah again;
We’re saved by the blood,
Hallelujah, Amen.

About This Hymn
"We're Saved by the Blood That Was Drawn from the Side" is a lesser-known but deeply moving hymn by Fanny J. Crosby, one of the most prolific and beloved hymnwriters in Christian history. In this composition, Crosby centers the believer’s hope of salvation on the precious, sacrificial blood of Jesus Christ, shed at Calvary. The hymn reflects on the moment recorded in John 19:34, when a Roman soldier pierced the side of the crucified Savior, and blood and water flowed out, a moment rich in theological symbolism and fulfilled prophecy.
With her characteristic clarity and deep spiritual insight, Crosby emphasizes the efficacy of Christ’s blood to cleanse, redeem, and save the soul from sin. The hymn focuses not only on the historical event of the crucifixion, but also on its ongoing personal impact for each believer. It calls listeners to place their full trust in the redemptive work accomplished at the cross, and to rejoice in the security of that salvation.
Though not as widely known as some of her famous hymns like “Blessed Assurance” or “To God Be the Glory,” this hymn shares Crosby’s hallmark features: a strong gospel message, accessible and poetic language, and a clear call to faith. Its theological depth and personal tone make it especially suitable for communion services, evangelistic meetings, and personal meditation on the passion of Christ. Like much of Crosby’s work, it is both a proclamation and an invitation to trust fully in the blood that was drawn from the Savior’s side, and to rest in the assurance of salvation.
