Shepherd of Tender Youth
Lyrics
guiding in love and truth
through devious ways,
Christ, our triumphant King,
we come your name to sing
and here our children bring
to join your praise.
Christ, the incarnate Word,
healer of strife.
You did yourself abase
that from sin's deep disgrace
you might now save our race,
and give us life.
you have prepared the feast
of holy love;
and in our mortal pain
none calls on you in vain;
our plea do not disdain;
help from above.
our shepherd and our pride,
our staff and song.
Jesus, O Christ of God,
by your enduring Word
lead us where you have trod;
make our faith strong.
sound we your praises high
and joyful sing:
infants and all the throng
who to your Church belong,
unite to swell the song
to Christ, our King!

About This Hymn
Shepherd of Tender Youth is one of the earliest Christian hymns still known and sung today, attributed to Clement of Alexandria, an early Church father and theologian of the second and early third centuries. Written originally in Greek, the hymn reflects the devotional life of the early Church and offers a vivid picture of Christ as the gentle and faithful Shepherd who lovingly guides His people. Its language is deeply biblical, drawing on Old Testament imagery and fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, whom Clement presents as both Teacher and Redeemer.
The hymn emphasizes Christ’s care for believers, especially those who are young or spiritually vulnerable. The image of Christ as Shepherd echoes the words of Jesus in the Gospel of John, where He declares Himself to be the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep. Clement expands this image by portraying Christ as the one who feeds, guards, and leads His flock in paths of righteousness. This Shepherd does not rule with harsh authority, but with compassion, wisdom, and sacrificial love.
A notable feature of the hymn is its Trinitarian awareness and high Christology. Christ is praised not merely as a moral guide, but as the divine Word who existed before all things and through whom believers receive life and light. Clement’s theology reflects the early Church’s growing clarity about the person of Christ as fully divine and fully involved in the salvation and sanctification of His people.
The hymn also functions as a prayer, asking Christ to guide believers safely through life and to keep them from sin and danger. This pastoral tone made it especially suitable for instruction and worship within the catechetical setting of the early Church, where new believers were taught the faith and prepared for baptism.
Shepherd of Tender Youth stands as a remarkable witness to the continuity of Christian worship across centuries. Though composed nearly two thousand years ago, its message remains timeless. It reminds believers that Christ’s care has never changed and that the Church today is still led by the same loving Shepherd who guided the faithful of the earliest Christian generations.
