Sing We of the Modern City

By Fred Kaan

Lyrics

1. Sing we of the modern city,
Scene alike of joy and stress;
Sing we of its nameless people
In their urban wilderness.
Into endless rows of houses
Life is set a millionfold,
Life expressed in human beings
Daily born and growing old.
2. In the city full of people,
World of speed and hectic days,
In the ever-changing setting
Of the latest trend and craze,
Christ is present, and among us;
In the crowd we see Him stand.
In the bustle of the city
Jesus Christ is every man.
3. God is not remote in heaven,
But on earth to share our shame,
Changing graph and mass and number
Into persons with a name.
Christ has shown, beyond statistics,
Human life with glory crowned,
By His timeless presence proving
People matter, people count!

About This Hymn

Sing We of the Modern City is a hymn that gives voice to Christian faith within the realities of contemporary urban life. Written by Fred Kaan, a pioneering hymn writer of the twentieth century, the text reflects his deep concern that Christian worship should engage honestly with modern social conditions. Rather than retreating into nostalgic or purely inward devotion, this hymn invites believers to see the city itself as a place of divine concern, responsibility, and mission.

The hymn speaks from within the noise, complexity, and diversity of the modern city. It acknowledges crowded streets, human need, injustice, and spiritual longing, while affirming that God is present and active in these very settings. Kaan draws on the biblical vision of God’s care for communities and cities, echoing the call given through the prophet Jeremiah to seek the welfare of the city where God’s people dwell. The city is not portrayed as hopeless or godless, but as a field where faith is to be lived out with courage, compassion, and integrity.

A central theme of the hymn is Christian witness through daily life. Believers are called to be light and salt within the structures of modern society, bringing justice, mercy, and truth into workplaces, neighborhoods, and civic life. Worship is shown to be incomplete if it does not lead to action. Praise offered in church must continue in streets, homes, and institutions through service to others, especially the poor and the oppressed. This reflects Christ’s teaching that service to the least is service to Him.

The hymn also emphasizes corporate responsibility. Faith is not merely a private matter, but a shared calling of God’s people to work together for the good of the city. Kaan’s language encourages hope rather than despair, urging believers to trust that God’s kingdom is advancing even amid broken systems and human struggle.

Sing We of the Modern City remains especially relevant in an increasingly urbanized world. It challenges the Church to sing honestly about present realities while holding firmly to biblical hope. The hymn calls Christians to faithful presence, active love, and confident trust in God’s redeeming purpose for the modern city.
