The Spirit of the Lord Revealed

By George W. Briggs

Lyrics

1.  The Spirit of the Lord revealed
His will to saints of old;
Their heart and mind lips unsealed
His glory to unfold.
Amid the gloom of ancient night
They hailed the dawning Word,
And in the coming of the light
Proclaimed the coming Lord.

2 The prophets passed; at length there came
To sojourn and abide,
The Word incarnate, to whose name
The prophets testified;
And He, the twilight overpast,
Himself, the Light of light,
As man with man, revealed at last
The Father to our sight.

3 Eternal Spirit, who dost speak
To mind and conscience still,
That we in this our day, may seek
To do our Father’s will,
To us the word of life impart,
Of Christ, the living way;
Give us the quiet, humble heart
To hear and to obey.

Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:18-19; John 14:26; Romans 8:14-16

About This Hymn

“The Spirit of the Lord Revealed” is a devotional hymn by George W. Briggs that highlights the work and presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. Written in the early twentieth century, the hymn draws upon Scripture to celebrate the Spirit’s role in guidance, empowerment, and comfort. Briggs emphasizes both the active ministry of the Spirit in revealing God’s truth and the transformative effect on the heart of those who follow Him.

The hymn opens by acknowledging the Spirit as the One who brings light, instruction, and comfort to God’s people. It echoes Isaiah’s prophecy and Christ’s own words in Luke, describing the Spirit as sent to bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, and comfort those in need (Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:18-19, KJV). The Spirit is presented as a personal and active presence, guiding believers into all truth and strengthening them for service.

A key theme of the hymn is revelation. The Spirit does not merely inspire knowledge but illuminates the mind and heart, helping believers understand Scripture, discern God’s will, and live in obedience (John 14:26, KJV). This revelation is both educational and relational, cultivating intimacy with God and fostering spiritual growth. Briggs emphasizes that the Spirit’s work confirms the believer’s adoption as a child of God, bringing assurance of salvation and peace (Romans 8:14-16, KJV).

The hymn also encourages active participation in the Spirit’s work. Believers are called to yield themselves to the Spirit’s guidance, allowing His presence to shape their thoughts, words, and actions. Worship, devotion, and obedience are presented as natural responses to the Spirit’s revelation, creating a life marked by holiness and joy.

“The Spirit of the Lord Revealed” continues to inspire worshipers as a hymn of encouragement and assurance. Its focus on the transforming and enlightening work of the Holy Spirit makes it suitable for personal devotion, corporate worship, and moments of reflection on God’s guidance. Briggs’s hymn affirms that the Spirit is ever-present, revealing God’s truth, comforting His people, and empowering them to live faithfully.
