This Is the Threefold Truth

By Fred Pratt Green

Lyrics

1. This is the threefold truth on which our faith depends;
and with this joyful cry worship begins and ends:
Refrain:
Christ has died!
Christ is risen!
Christ will come again!
2. Long used by saints of old,
new-minted for our time,
our liturgies confess the hope we have in him:
3. On this we fix our minds as, kneeling side by side,
we take the bread and wine, take him, the Crucified:
4. By this we are upheld when doubt or grief assails
our Christian faith and love, and only grace avails:
5. This is the threefold truth which, if we hold it fast,
changes the world and us and brings us home at last:

Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; John 14:16-17; Ephesians 1:3-14

About This Hymn

“This Is the Threefold Truth” is a theologically rich hymn by Fred Pratt Green that affirms the Christian doctrine of the Trinity in clear, worshipful language. Written in the latter half of the twentieth century, the hymn reflects Green’s gift for expressing deep biblical theology in forms accessible to congregational singing. Rather than presenting the Trinity as an abstract concept, the hymn celebrates the living work of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in creation, redemption, and ongoing renewal.

The hymn opens by confessing the unity of God while acknowledging the threefold revelation of the divine life. This echoes the baptismal command of Matthew 28:19, where Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are named together as one God. Green carefully balances unity and distinction, helping worshipers confess orthodox Trinitarian faith without confusion or speculation. The emphasis is doxological, inviting praise rather than debate.

Each person of the Trinity is associated with God’s gracious action toward humanity. The Father is praised as Creator and source of all blessing, the One from whom all life flows. The Son is celebrated as Redeemer, whose saving work brings forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope, reflecting the themes of Ephesians 1 and the gospel proclamation of Christ’s work. The Holy Spirit is honored as the abiding presence of God, guiding, empowering, and sustaining the church, in harmony with John 14:16-17.

A notable strength of the hymn is its strong connection between doctrine and worship. Green shows that Trinitarian belief is not merely a statement of faith, but the foundation of Christian life and praise. The benediction of 2 Corinthians 13:14 resonates throughout the hymn, as grace, love, and fellowship are traced to their divine source in the triune God.

“This Is the Threefold Truth” continues to serve the church as a valuable hymn for Trinity Sunday, baptisms, and general worship. It teaches sound doctrine while fostering reverence and joy, reminding believers that the God they worship is one Lord, revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, working together for the salvation and renewal of His people.
