Throned Upon the Awful Tree

By John Ellerton

Lyrics

1. Throned upon the awful tree,
King of grief, I watch with Thee;
darkness veils Thine anguished face,
none its lines of woe can trace,
none can tell what pangs unknown
hold Thee silent and alone.
2. Silent through those three dread hours,
wrestling with the evil pow'rs,
left alone with human sin,
gloom around Thee and within,
till th'appointed time is nigh,
till the Lamb of God may die.
3. Hark that cry that peals aloud
upward through the whelming cloud!
Thou, the Father’s only Son,
Thou, His own Anointed One.
Thou dost ask Him- can it be?
“Why hast Thou forsaken Me?”
4. Lord, should fear and anguish roll
darkly o’er my sinful soul,
Thou, who once wast thus bereft
that Thine own might ne’er be left-
teach me by that bitter cry
in the gloom to know Thee nigh.

John 19:16-30; Isaiah 53:4-6; Galatians 3:13; Colossians 2:14-15

About This Hymn

“Throned Upon the Awful Tree” is a solemn and deeply theological Passion hymn by John Ellerton that reflects on the crucifixion of Christ as both suffering and sovereign victory. Written in the nineteenth century, the hymn presents the cross not merely as an instrument of shame and death, but as the paradoxical throne from which Christ reigns. Ellerton’s language is reverent and restrained, guiding worshipers to contemplate the mystery of redemption accomplished through the suffering Messiah.

The hymn draws heavily on the Gospel account of the crucifixion, particularly John 19, portraying Jesus lifted up between heaven and earth. By describing Christ as “throned” upon the cross, Ellerton echoes Jesus’ own words that He would be glorified through His lifting up. The cross becomes the place where divine love and justice meet, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 53, where the suffering Servant bears the sins of many.

A central theme of the hymn is substitutionary atonement. Christ is presented as the sin bearer, enduring the curse of the law on behalf of humanity, in harmony with Galatians 3:13. The hymn invites believers to see the crucifixion not as a tragic accident, but as the deliberate and victorious act of God to redeem His people. Through His suffering, Christ triumphs over sin, death, and the powers of darkness.

The hymn also emphasizes the victory achieved at the cross. Drawing implicitly on Colossians 2:14-15, it presents Christ’s death as the moment when the record of sin is canceled and hostile powers are disarmed. This victorious aspect does not diminish the agony of the cross, but gives it profound meaning. Sorrow and triumph are held together, leading the worshiper to humble gratitude and awe.

“Throned Upon the Awful Tree” is especially suited for Holy Week, Good Friday, and communion services. Its strength lies in its ability to unite deep theological truth with devotional reflection. The hymn calls believers to behold the crucified Christ with reverence, to trust fully in His finished work, and to worship the King who reigns through sacrificial love.
