To Mock Your Reign, O Dearest Lord

By Fred Pratt Green

Lyrics

1. To mock your reign, O dearest Lord,
they made a crown of thorns;
set you with taunts along that road
from which no one returns.
They did not know, as we do now,
that glorious is your crown;
that thorns would flower upon your brow,
your sorrows heal our own.
2. In mock acclaim, O gracious Lord,
they snatched a purple cloak,
your passion turned, for all they cared,
into a soldier's joke.
They did not know, as we do now,
that though we merit blame
you will your robe of mercy throw
around our naked shame.
3. A sceptered reed, O patient Lord,
they thrust into your hand,
and acted out their grim charade
to its appointed end.
They did not know, as we do now,
though empires rise and fall,
your Kingdom shall not cease to grow
till love embraces all.

About This Hymn

“To Mock Your Reign, O Dearest Lord” is a hymn by Fred Pratt Green that reflects on the suffering and humiliation of Christ during His passion. The hymn focuses on the moment when Jesus was mocked by Roman soldiers, crowned with thorns, and falsely hailed as king, revealing the contrast between human cruelty and divine love.

The hymn draws from the Gospel accounts in Matthew 27:27–31 and Mark 15:16–20, where soldiers ridicule Jesus, dress Him in a robe, and place a crown of thorns upon His head. What was intended as mockery becomes, in truth, a declaration of His kingship, though misunderstood by those who rejected Him.

Another important theme is the suffering servant described in Isaiah 53:3–5, who was despised, rejected, and wounded for the transgressions of others. The hymn reflects this prophecy, showing that Christ’s suffering was not meaningless but part of God’s redemptive plan.

The message also connects with Philippians 2:5–8, which speaks of Christ humbling Himself and becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. The hymn highlights this humility, presenting Jesus as the true King whose reign is marked not by force but by sacrificial love.

“To Mock Your Reign, O Dearest Lord” invites believers to reflect deeply on the cost of redemption and the nature of Christ’s kingship. It calls worshipers to recognize that the One who was mocked and rejected is the same Lord who reigns in glory, having accomplished salvation through His suffering.
