When Jesus Comes In Glory

By Samuel M. Miller

Lyrics

1. When Jesus comes in glory,
As Lord and King of kings,
O what a wondrous story
The blessed Bible brings:
His face will shine like the sunlight,
His head be white as snow,
His eyes like flaming firelight,
His feet like brass aglow.
2. His voice like rushing waters
Will reach with mighty sound
Into the deepest quarters
Of all creation round;
And at this wondrous greeting
The dead in Christ shall rise,
Their Lord and Saviour meeting
In glory in the skies.
3. And we who believing
And His appearing love,
Shall know we are receiving
His glory from above;
His resurrection power
Will raise us to the place
Where we that wondrous hour
Shall see Him face to face.
4. O hasten Thine appearing
Thou bright and Morning Star!
Lord, may we soon be hearing
The trumpet sound afar;
They people all are yearning
To be Thy raptured bride,
To be Thy own returning
Be caught up to Thy side.

Matthew 24:30-31; Titus 2:13; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; Revelation 1:7

About This Hymn

“When Jesus Comes in Glory” is an Advent focused hymn written by Samuel M. Miller, a nineteenth century hymn writer associated with strong Second Coming themes. The hymn reflects the deep expectation and hope that characterized much Protestant and Adventist hymnody of that period, especially the longing for Christ’s visible and triumphant return.

The text centers on the glory of Christ’s second coming as a real, public, and victorious event. Rather than presenting the return of Christ as hidden or symbolic, the hymn affirms the biblical teaching that Jesus will come in power, majesty, and splendor, witnessed by all. This emphasis aligns closely with Scripture and reinforces the historic Christian hope of a bodily and glorious return of the Lord.

Throughout the hymn, contrasts are drawn between the present world of suffering and injustice and the future reign of Christ in righteousness and peace. The coming of Jesus is portrayed as the moment when wrongs are made right, sorrow is ended, and God’s purposes are fully revealed. This gives the hymn both a prophetic and pastoral tone, offering comfort to believers who endure hardship while waiting for redemption.

The hymn also carries a call to readiness. The certainty of Christ’s return invites believers to live faithfully, watchfully, and with confidence. Hope is not passive but shapes conduct, worship, and perseverance. The anticipation of glory strengthens faith and encourages steadfast devotion to Christ.

“When Jesus Comes in Glory” has been valued in worship settings that emphasize Advent hope, eschatology, and assurance. It continues to remind believers that history is moving toward a divinely appointed climax, when Christ will appear in glory and gather His people to Himself, fulfilling every promise of God.
