Edward H. Joy was born on November 16, 1871, in Canterbury, Kent, England. He became involved with the Salvation Army in his hometown, first as a band member at Folkestone and then as an officer from 1894. His service included leadership roles in several corps, as well as positions at the international headquarters, where he became Under Secretary in the Foreign Office in 1917.
After 1919, Joy served as Immigration Secretary in western Canada, and in 1932 he became editor-in-chief of The War Cry in South Africa. Throughout his career, he rose to the rank of Salvation Army Colonel. Edward H. Joy retired in 1938 and passed away on February 16, 1949, in Cheam, Surrey, England.
