About G. Wade Robinson

George Wade Robinson (1838–1877) was a gifted Congregational minister and poet whose brief life was marked by a deep devotion to both pastoral work and the literary arts. Born in Cork, Ireland, he received a high-level academic foundation at Trinity College, Dublin, and later at New College, St. John’s Wood, in London. His ministry began in his native Ireland, where he served as co-pastor at the York Street Chapel in Dublin alongside the esteemed Dr. Urwick. His subsequent career led him to several significant pastorates in England, including appointments at St. John’s Wood, Dudley, and Union Street in Brighton.

As a man of letters, Robinson was a regular contributor to the hymnological landscape of the mid-19th century. His poetic sensibilities were captured in two published volumes, Songs in God's World and Loveland. His hymns were noted for their emotional resonance and theological clarity, often appearing in influential collections of the era. Among his most recognized works were "Strangers and pilgrims here below," a reflection on the Christian life as a journey, and "Weary with my load of sin," which focused on the theme of contrition.

One of Robinson’s most enduring contributions to hymnody is the evocative "Loved with everlasting love,"which is frequently set to the tune I Am His, and He Is Mine. The hymn remains a favorite for its celebration of the believer's security and joy in Christ. His other works, such as "One sole baptismal sign," emphasized the unity of the church, while "When to the exiled seer were given" offered a lyrical meditation on the New Jerusalem.

Robinson's health eventually failed him, and he passed away in Southampton in January 1877 at the young age of 38. Despite his short life, his work continued to gain traction posthumously, appearing with alterations and abridgments in major works like Horder’s Congregational Hymns (1884). He is remembered today as a sensitive soul who combined the "loveland" of his poetic imagination with a steadfast commitment to the spiritual care of his congregations.
