About Greg Nelson
Greg Nelson (b. 1948) is a highly influential American songwriter and producer who became a cornerstone of the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) industry during the 1980s and 90s. While his work often appears in modern hymnals, he is primarily recognized as a prolific creator of "anthems"—songs designed for powerful choral or solo performances that emphasize personal devotion and the missionary call of the church. Over several decades, his compositions have served as a bridge between traditional church music and the evolving contemporary sounds of evangelical worship.
Nelson is perhaps best known for co-writing "People Need the Lord," which has become a modern standard for evangelism, appearing in at least 16 different hymnal instances. His lyrics often focus on the redemptive work of Christ and the believer's response to the world's spiritual needs. Beyond his songwriting, Nelson’s impact on the genre was solidified through his work as a producer for major Christian artists such as Sandi Patty, Steve Green, and Larnelle Harris. His ability to blend orchestral grandeur with accessible pop sensibilities helped define the "Inspirational" sound that dominated the church during his era.
Throughout his career, Nelson has been recognized for his excellence in craft, receiving multiple GMA Dove Awards and Grammy nominations. His contributions extend beyond English-speaking congregations, as evidenced by the widespread translation of his songs like "People Need the Lord" (Tienen que saber) and "Jesus, Jesus, Lord to Me" (Cristo tanto me amó) into Spanish and other languages. His legacy remains that of a "songwriter for the church," providing music that is both theatrically compelling and theologically grounded.
