About H. G. Jackson

Henry Godden Jackson (1838–1914) was an influential American Methodist minister and missionary whose work played a vital role in the global expansion of the Methodist church during the late 19th century. Born in Manchester, Indiana, on New Year’s Day, Jackson dedicated his life to the ministry, most notably serving for many years as a missionary in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His time in South America was defining; he became a bridge between North American evangelicalism and the Spanish-speaking world, a legacy clearly reflected in his extensive body of translated and original hymns.

Jackson’s literary output is characterized by a remarkable linguistic versatility. He was not only a prolific writer in English but also a significant figure in Spanish hymnody, authoring and translating dozens of works that became staples in Latin American congregations. His hymns often emphasize the themes of conversion, guidance, and the hope of a "Heavenly Homeland." Notable works such as "If you from sin are longing to be free" (appearing in over 60 hymnals) and its Spanish counterpart "Si del pecado anhelas el perdón" demonstrate his focus on the evangelical call to repentance and grace.

Upon returning to the United States, Jackson continued his ministry in the Chicago area, specifically within the River Forest and Oak Park communities. His influence remained global even after his return, with his texts being translated into German, Arabic, Portuguese, and even Chinese and Malayalam. Throughout his career, Jackson maintained a "soldier of the cross" mentality, visible in his many marching hymns and themes of Christian warfare and pilgrimage, such as "From Egypt's cruel bondage fled." He passed away in 1914, leaving behind a vast collection of sacred music that continues to unite diverse linguistic communities in worship.
