About James Vila Blake

James Vila Blake (1842–1925)

James Vila Blake was an American minister, hymn writer, editor, and religious author whose work contributed significantly to the development of Unitarian worship in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He is remembered for combining pastoral leadership, literary skill, and a deep concern for meaningful congregational song.

Blake was born on January 21, 1842, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He pursued higher education at Harvard College, graduating in 1862, and later completed his theological training at Harvard Divinity School in 1866. After entering ministry, he served Unitarian congregations in Massachusetts and Illinois, devoting many years to preaching, teaching, and church leadership.

His final and longest pastorate was in Evanston, Illinois, where he served from 1892 to 1916. During those years, he became known not only as a preacher but also as a thoughtful voice in liberal Christianity, emphasizing moral living, spiritual growth, and the fatherhood of God.

Blake was the author of several books and a contributor to sacred hymnody. He worked alongside notable hymn compilers William Channing Gannett and Frederic Lucian Hosmer in preparing the first edition of Unity Hymns and Chorals (1880), an important collection for Unitarian worship.

Among his best-known hymns is “Father, Thou Art Calling, Calling to Us Plainly,” a text centered on the divine call to faithfulness and spiritual response. Another notable hymn, “O Sing with Loud and Joyful Song,” celebrates the unity and praise of the universal church. These hymns were later included in respected collections such as The New Hymn and Tune Book and Hymns of the Spirit.

James Vila Blake died on April 28, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois. His legacy lives on through his ministry, writings, and hymns that sought to inspire worshippers toward reverence, unity, and devotion to God.
