About Jefferson Hascall

Jefferson Hascall (1807–1887)

Jefferson Hascall was an American Methodist minister, preacher, church leader, and public servant whose life was marked by powerful evangelistic preaching, strong moral conviction, and dedication to Christian education and reform.

He was born in 1807 in Thompson. He later studied at Wilbraham Academy, an institution that prepared many ministers and educators in the Methodist tradition. In 1829, he was ordained into the Methodist Church, beginning a lifelong ministry of preaching and pastoral leadership.

Hascall became a prominent figure within Methodism, serving as a minister and later as a presiding elder over the Worcester Conference. His reputation as an eloquent and persuasive preacher led to large congregations, and he was widely respected for his ability to communicate the gospel clearly and powerfully. Historical accounts note that his ministry contributed to the conversion of more than 150 individuals, reflecting a fruitful evangelistic impact.

He also represented New England twice in the church’s General Conference, showing his influence within Methodist governance and decision-making.

Beyond church leadership, Hascall was known as a committed citizen who supported education and opposed slavery, aligning himself with moral reform movements of his time. His preaching and public life reflected a concern for both spiritual renewal and social righteousness.

In his personal life, he married Julia Catherine Griswold in 1832. After her death in 1842, he married Lavina Livermore in 1843, and together they had seven children: Stephen, Julia, Martha, Henry, Emily, Wilbur, and Lee.

Jefferson Hascall died in 1887 in Medford.

Although not primarily known as a hymn writer, his legacy remains that of a faithful Methodist minister whose preaching, leadership, and moral influence left a lasting mark on the church and his community.
