About Jennie Evelyn Hussey

Jennie Evelyn Hussey (1874–1958) was a remarkable American hymn writer whose life was a testament to creative perseverance in the face of physical suffering. Born in Henniker, New Hampshire, she was a lifelong member of the Society of Friends (Quakers). From a very young age, Hussey was afflicted with severe rheumatism, which left her an invalid for much of her life. Despite being physically confined, her intellectual and spiritual life was vibrant; she began writing poetry as a child and saw her first work published when she was only thirteen years old.

By the age of sixteen, Hussey had expanded her repertoire to include stories, articles, and even intricate designs for crochet needlework, which were featured in various magazines of the era. Her transition into hymnody began in 1898, and she eventually produced roughly 150 hymns. Her writing often reflected the quiet, meditative strength of her Quaker heritage, balanced with the emotional warmth of the gospel song movement.

Hussey is best known for the deeply moving hymn "Lead Me to Calvary," written in 1921. The text, set to a melody by William J. Kirkpatrick, serves as a poignant prayer to never forget the sacrifice of Christ. Given her personal battle with chronic pain, the lyrics, particularly the plea "Lest I forget Gethsemane, lest I forget Thine agony", carry an authentic weight of someone who understood the nature of endurance and the need for divine companionship in the midst of "shadows."

Throughout her long life in New England, Hussey remained a prolific contributor to religious periodicals and songbooks. Her work was characterized by a specific type of devotional clarity, focusing on the themes of following Christ's path and finding peace in His presence. Even as her physical condition limited her mobility, her verses traveled globally, finding a place in the hymnals of nearly every Protestant denomination.

Jennie Evelyn Hussey passed away in 1958 at the age of 84. She is remembered not only for her literary contributions but for the quiet dignity with which she transformed her personal "calvary" of physical illness into a ministry of song that has comforted generations of believers. Her legacy remains anchored in that singular, powerful request: to be led daily to the cross.
