About John R. MacDuff

John Ross Macduff (1818–1895)

John Ross Macduff was a distinguished minister of the Church of Scotland and one of the most prolific devotional writers of the 19th century. Born at Bonhard, near Perth, he was educated at the University of Edinburgh during a period of significant theological vitality. Macduff served several influential parishes, most notably the Sandyford Church in Glasgow, where his preaching drew large congregations. He was honored with Doctor of Divinity degrees from both the University of Glasgow and the University of New York, reflecting his international reputation as a scholar and spiritual guide.

Macduff’s literary output was staggering, with many of his practical and devotional books reaching a global audience. His writing was characterized by a "sympathetic imagination" and a deep sense of pastoral comfort. In 1857, his expertise in sacred song led to his appointment to the Hymnal Committee of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. His own hymns were first collected in Altar Stones (1853)—a title that suggests his view of hymns as foundational blocks for personal and public devotion—and were later expanded in The Gates of Praise (1876).

His hymnological style is marked by a strong focus on the Second Advent and the personal sufficiency of Christ. His most enduring hymn, "Christ Is Coming! Let Creation," is a powerful Advent anthem that calls upon the natural world to "bid her groans and travail cease" in anticipation of the Lord’s return. Another favorite, "Jesus Wept! Those Tears Are Over," demonstrates his ability to take a specific biblical narrative (the raising of Lazarus) and extract profound emotional and spiritual lessons for the believer. His verses often emphasized the "Everlasting Arms" of God, providing a source of strength that resonated with the Victorian emphasis on resilience and faith through trial.

After retiring from active pastoral work in 1871, Macduff moved to Chislehurst, Kent, where he continued his literary pursuits until his death in 1895. He remains a key figure in Scottish hymnody, remembered for bridging the gap between high liturgical standards and the popular demand for warm, accessible, and scripturally grounded sacred poetry.
